Project Management

A Necessary Discipline

Project management is the process of planning, organizing, and executing a project to achieve a specific goal within a set time frame and budget. It is a crucial tool that can help achieve business objectives. It involves coordinating all the necessary activities and resources to meet deadlines and achieve the desired outcome.

Project management is a discipline emphasized by all industries. Practitioners are trained in historically sound practices and newer thinking about the subject.

Some of the tasks and responsibilities of a project manager include:
  • Establishing RACI
  • Developing a business case
  • Defining the project’s scope
  • Planning the cost and budget (e.g., the pool)
  • Managing project resources
  • Documenting the project’s progress
  • Communicating with stakeholders
  • Assessing risks
  • Troubleshooting
  • Leading quality assurance

I am still getting familiar with the individual capabilities of existing staff. Possibly, one or more current employees may have a professional certification in project management (similar to a CPA in accounting). Often, this skill set resides in the IT department.

The discipline of project management is not limited to IT. It is a versatile skill set that can be applied to all construction projects and business development efforts. This versatility reassures us that the benefits of a solid project management discipline are not confined to a specific type of project. I will explore the potential of existing talent that is under-utilized, or identify staff to upskill.

If this can not be created internally, searching outside the organization for a new hire will be necessary. The construction projects would have (and will) benefit from a disciplined project management plan and leader.
